Become a Part of Us

There are two main ways people can join the railway and become a part of us; either by buying Shares in the Company or by becoming a working volunteer.

The Churnet Valley Railway is it's own Public Limited Company, owned by Shareholders. Opportunities exist to buy shares in the Railway that come with a series of benefits and incentives depending upon the amount of shares purchased. The CVR is one of only a handful or preserved railways to be totally owned outright an not leased or rented from a local authority. If you're interested in becoming a shareholder, or would like further information please contact the CVR.

If you don't wish to purchase shares, but are interested in getting involved physically you could become a member of the North Staffordshire Railway Company (1978) LTD and join one of our many volunteer departments. Whether you can give one afternoon a month or a couple of days per week, all are made welcome in whichever department you choose to join. Volunteering can bring a fresh and new interest to your life, regardless of age, sex or ability. The CVR relies upon the efforts and enthusiasm of its volunteers to enable the railway to provide a train service. You don't need to know anything about railways, as training and lots of encouragement will be given along your journey as a volunteer. If you're interested in becoming a volunteer, or would like further information please read on...

Why Not Get Involved Yourself?

The Churnet Valley Railway is a preserved heritage railway that operates along the valley floor interweaving with both the River Churnet and Cauldon Canal through what is known locally as Staffordshire's Little Switzerland.

We have been operating trains since 24th August 1996, and since this very first day we have slowly expanded into a 5½-mile railway with three beautifully restored stations and further plans for expansions into Leek.

None of this though would have ever been achieved without the efforts and enthusiasm of our volunteers. Everybody will have heard the old saying “never volunteer”; however volunteering can bring a fresh and new interest to your life, regardless of age, sex or ability. Are you looking for something rewarding to do in your spare time? Do you enjoy meeting new people? Do you want to learn new skills? Then come and get involved helping to keep one of North Staffordshire’s premier attractions running, whilst having a great time yourself as the next member of our volunteer family! With hours to suit your own lifestyle, putting as little or as much time in as you want to can make the biggest of differences.

You don’t need to know anything about railways, as full training and lots of encouragement will be given along the way. Whatever your skills-base and experience, whether you’re working, retired or studying, there’s something for you at the Churnet Valley Railway. However there is more to volunteering than simply driving trains, and we hope the information within this website will give you an insight into what it really takes to run a basic train service on our railway.

There is more than one reason to volunteer, with everyone identifying their own personal goals to achieve. These can include some of the following:

  • Learn New Skills
  • Improve CV
  • Make New Friends
  • Give something back to Your Community
  • Use towards completion of the “Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme”

The CVR offers a unique opportunity to travel back in time, and bring the memories of a lost era back to life for countless people. Whatever your reason for wishing to join us, come and be a part of this special little place.

There are many departments within the railway. If you wish to visit us during any operating day, then feel free to pop down to any of our stations where a member of staff will offer you a warm welcome and gladly show you around to help answer any queries you may have.
