The North Staffordshire Railway Co. (1978) Ltd. (NSRC) - Projects & Appeals

Reinstatement of Leek Brook Railway Station
Having successfully been awarded grants from Staffs Moorlands Council and Peak LEADER the NSRC have now rebuilt Leek Brook Station. It has been built as an exact replica of the 19th century building formerly attached to Leek Brook Signal Box, a Grade II listed building. It was officially opened on 14th October 2018.

The North Staffordshire Railway Company (1978) Ltd, the supporting charity for the Churnet Valley Railway, is happy to announce that the 2019 Raffle Tickets have arrived and are now available to purchase on-board all CVR services and from ourselves as well. This year target is to finish raising over £17,000 to replace the edging stones on Froghall Platform 1, as the current ones are starting to show their age.

The CVR returned trains to Kingsley & Froghall for the first time since 1965, on 11th August 2001. Since these historic days many thousands of trains have arrived and departed from what is the line’s current Southern terminus, hauled by a variety of locomotives ranging from "Thomas the Tank" up to "Duke of Gloucester". Improvements have steadily been carried out over the years to enhance the station's Heritage Appeal, but now the main platform is looking a little tired and the time has come to replace all of the Edging Stones with original style slabs. Each new slab costs £140, and we have 122 in total to replace!

The CVR originally launched an internal appeal in December 2015, with envelopes being left on all services asking for any loose change to be left behind by visitors to the line. A “Roll of Honour” was also set up for anyone wishing to cover the cost of a full slab themselves. The appeal proved a reasonable success, with over £3,600 being generated. However other urgent projects took priority, namely the completion of the Ipstones Track Appeal and then the purchase of Cheddleton Station Building – all of which was achieved but took the limited volunteer resources elsewhere for the time being.

With the highly acclaimed completion of Leekbrook Waiting Room last year – using proceeds from the 2018 appeal – the NSRC looked at which project needed further support for 2019 and that could provide it’s supporters with a visual achievement. The Froghall Appeal soon became a prime candidate, and this has now been resurrected for 2019. To date the CVR have managed to raise over a third of the funds needed, so now we are looking for help to complete this.

So how can you help? With 2019 Raffle tickets now available, you purchase them onboard all our public services or from the NSRC direct. Envelopes are being left on all trains too, asking for any loose change you may have to support this project, which will be gratefully received if filled and given to anyone of our volunteer teams during your visit. Further if anyone fancies sponsoring their own Stone to join the “Roll of Honour” then please send cheques or monies to the NSRC, with a note confirming it’s for the Froghall Appeal. Or finally for those unable to physically make it to our line, you can visit the NSRC

Cheddleton Station Appeal

The CHURNET VALLEY RAILWAY has had many successful Galas using its own fleet of locomotives. However, visiting locomotives are a great draw for the enthusiasts and public.

In the past we have had a TRANSPORT FUND to specifically pay for the costs of moving locomotives to and from the railway. These costs are not trivial - a typical example would be moving the Coal Tank to the railway which will cost £2,700 in each direction.

The North Staffordshire Railway Company (1978) Ltd, supporting the Churnet Valley Railway, has re-opened the Transport Fund. Donations are Gift Aided. Please consider contributing to this special fund and donations can be placed in the special envelopes on trains and at stations, or sent to:

In February 2018 Cheddleton station building passed into the ownership of the Churnet Valley Railway - 40 years after the preservation scheme began there. Following a successful £50,000 appeal, the CVR (1992) plc has acquired the freehold of the Grade II-listed building from Staffordshire County Council - meaning that it now owns every part of its eight-mile line from Leek Brook Junction to Oakamoor.

The appeal is still open as the NSRC now wish to raise further funds for the renovation of the Station buildings and platform.

There are several ways to donate (see below) and for all donations to the The North Staffordshire Railway Co (1978) Ltd we are able to reclaim 28p for every pound that you donate through Gift Aid.
